    I am Thankful for...
    I am thankful for... oral surgeon Dr. Chen and his staff, the ER staff, and the sixth floor nursing staff at Maricopa County Hospital for taking good care of me. It was made very clear to me while in the hospital how close I came to dying. And I was a cranky and difficult patient (a lot of pain, morphine useless) but the nursing staff didn't take it personally.

    New LJ friends?
    Hi, azjournal.

    So, I've been on LiveJournal since 2001. My activity levels on here have decreased substantially over the past few years. Social networking sites and other blog sites really seem to have taken a lot of the excitement and energy out of LiveJournal. However, after partaking in some of these other online activities, I have found that none are nearly as satisfying as this very site.

    I am looking to become a regular and active user of LiveJournal again, and was hoping to add new friends who are also regular and active users. If you match this description, I'd very much like to be your friend. I miss the days of having pages and pages of friends list updates to read. Now, I am lucky if I have three or four updates a day.

    Anyway, I really do think there is still a need for LiveJournal, and I hope other people are starting to realize that while sites like MySpace (which sucks), Twitter (which is lame), or Facebook (cool, but not that intimate) have their places among the Interwebs, there is also a need to be able to have this very special community that actually requires people to think and read and write - even if it's about the silliest or most serious of things.

    Thanks for listening, and hope to hear from you soon.

    Cheers!

    Hello,
    I was wondering if there are any salons in Phoenix or the surrounding area (Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, etc)
    that sell CLIP-IN Hair Extension Sets and would do a consultation and dye them to match my hair, have a variety to pick from, etc.

    Thanks so much.

    My computer has finally done the inevitable and presented me with the blue screen of death, doom, and despair.  I was expecting to replace it in the next year or so, but would like to try and revive it to recover pictures and such.  I'm guessing it's just getting old and even replacing the hard drive or another part would be a temporary fix, but one I'm willing to make for now.
    Does anyone know of a good business that can run a diagnostic and hopefully fix it without trying to gouge me?  I don't mind paying for this, but I don't really want to deal with the type of condescending up-selling associated with mechanics, and I know a lot of places charge a lot for the diagnostic and put some of that towards fixing it within a certain time frame.  I'd rather get a free/cheap diagnostic and fix it at my leisure if it's even fixable.
    But if I'm completely wrong in these expectations, let me know that too, please.  Thanks for any help.

    I'm thankful...
    This got started in FB, but I think I'll also post these in my other social sites.

    Thx to Jill: Let's see how many ppl can do this. Every day this month until Thanksgiving, think of one thing that you are thankful for and post it as your status. "Today I am thankful for..." The longer you do it, the harder it gets! Now if you think you can do it then repost this message as your status to invite others to take the challenge, then post what YOU are thankful for today.

    Today (like most days) I am thankful for ... being surrounded by people who share their love, warmth, and caring with me. Having been sick so long, it's hard for me to be an active friend - yet many are very willing to still share their lives with me. Thank you.

    All I want for Christmas are my ... ... Teeth.

    FYI, you are my friend - being so is all I ask of you. Thank you for being in my life. However, if you have desire to help (as some of you have mentioned), this is a method you can. I DO NOT base my friendships upon who can or will give me money. *shudder* I'm not like that. I'm having enough trouble doing this fund-raiser because I'm uncomfortable even asking. So, please, do not feel any pressure to help me with this - I know we've ALL got a lot of stuff going on and I'm grateful you are my friend. <3

    school service project needs crochet hooks!
    i need some help, guys.

    my partner is a teacher out in surprise, and this year they’re required to complete a community service project by december. she and her teammate have decided to have their 8th grade students crochet hats and booties for phoenix children’s hospital. i will be going in a few days a week to teach them to crochet.

    this is where i need some help. we have about 60 kids to teach and only a dozen hooks. if you have any crochet hooks you can donate to this cause, please let me know and maybe i can arrange a pick up or provide a dollar or so for shipping. i work at michaels and get a discount, but even then, the hooks are $2 apiece, and none of us have that kind of money.

    any size is fine, but we’ll probably use f-k the most. extra needles for sewing in ends would also be fantastic. if you also have some yarn in your stash that you’d like to add to the cause, i wouldn’t mind that either. :p

    we will be donating the items the second week of december, but we will be continuing it throughout the school year. if you do have any items please email me (sheepishlyknit@gmail.com) and we’ll set up the exchange. also, please feel free to repost this anywhere you think is relevant.

    thanks, all!

    Hi all :)

    I will be traveling from San Diego to Tombstone in late April of 2010. Since we will be driving I was wondering about things to see along the way. Something to break up the 7 hr drive a bit and give us a chance to stretch our legs. Cheesy, bizare, good food, just plain odd... things like that. :P

    I have Googled the past couple days and not had any luck. I read the memories here and did not see anything along those lines.

    Any suggestions would be great and muchly appreciated!

    We will be traveling along I-8 to I-10 E and finally AZ-80 E.

    Thanks in advance.

    I know this is dorky, but....
    I recently got back from Hawaii, where I had the BEST Hawaiian shave ice ever. Craving it again, I went to the local Water N' Ice store that advertises Hawaiian style shave ice, only to be sorely disappointed. Does anyone know of anyplace that makes awesome shave ice (or, "sno cones")? The only other place I've been to in AZ besides Water N' Ice was this little drive-thru on the west side of town that was shaped like a sno cone, but that closed years ago. And, I'm on the east side now.

    Thanks!

    Boring legal question because Google is no help.
    Kind of a weird question, but what are the laws regarding dog abandonment in the case of private citizens? I have a sister who bought a dog, the dog was kicked out of the house she was living in and said sister basically dumped the dog at our house "until she could find a more permanent place for it". Needless to say two months have gone by and she hasn't come by the house once to check on the dog, hasn't sent money for food, etc. The family isn't exactly on the best of terms with this sister, and we barely see her ourselves. We've grown attached to the dog, trained it, fed it, taken her to the vet. Can she just come back at any time and take back the dog?

    Rumi, "This body is a guest-house"
    Today, Sunlight offers excerpted lines from Rumi's "Mathnawi",
    Book Five, in versions by Coleman Barks and Kabir Helminski,
    accompanied by the translation by Reynold Nicholson:

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The Guest-House
    This being human is a guest house.
    Every morning a new arrival.
    A joy, a depression, a meanness,
    some momentary awareness comes
    as an unexpected visitor.
    Welcome and entertain them all!
    Even if they're a crowd of sorrows,
    who violently sweep your house
    empty of its furniture.
    Still, treat each guest honorably.
    He may be clearing you out
    for some new delight.
    The dark thought, the shame, the malice -
    meet them at the door laughing,
    and invite them in.
    Be grateful for whoever comes,
    because each has been sent
    as a guide from beyond.
    -- Mathnawi V, 3644-46, 3676-80, 3693-95
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    The Guest House

    Darling, the body is a guest house;
    every morning someone new arrives.
    Don't say, "O, another weight around my neck!"
    or your guest will fly back to nothingness.
    Whatever enters your heart is a guest
    from the invisible world: entertain it well.

    Every day, and every moment, a thought comes
    like an honored guest into your heart.
    My soul, regard each thought as a person,
    for every person's value is in the thought they hold.

    If a sorrowful thought stands in the way,
    it is also preparing the way for joy.
    It furiously sweeps your house clean,
    in order that some new joy may appear from the Source.
    It scatters the withered leaves from the bough of the heart,
    in order that fresh green leaves might grow.
    It uproots the old joy so that
    a new joy may enter from Beyond.

    Sorrow pulls up the rotten root
    that was veiled from sight.
    Whatever sorrow takes away or causes the heart to shed,
    it puts something better in its place-
    especially for one who is certain
    that sorrow is the servant of the intuitive.

    Without the frown of clouds and lightning,
    the vines would be burned by the smiling sun.
    Both good and bad luck become guests in your heart:
    like planets traveling from sign to sign.
    When something transits your sign, adapt yourself,
    and be as harmonious as its ruling sign,
    so that when it rejoins the Moon,
    it will speak kindly to the Lord of the heart.

    Whenever sorrow comes again,
    meet it with smiles and laughter,
    saying, "O my Creator, save me from its harm,
    and do not deprive me of its good.
    Lord, remind me to be thankful,
    let me feel no regret if its benefit passes away."

    And if the pearl is not in sorrow's hand,
    let it go and still be pleased.
    Increase your sweet practice.
    Your practice will benefit you at another time;
    someday your need will be suddenly fulfilled.

    -- Mathnawi V: 3644-6, 3676-88, 3693-6, 3700-1
    Version by Kabir Helminski

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    This body, O youth, is a guest-house: every morning a new
    guest comes running (into it).
    Beware, do not say, "The (guest) is a burden to me," for
    presently he will fly back into non-existence.
    Whatsoever comes into thy heart from the invisible world is
    thy guest: entertain it well!
    Every day, too, at every moment a (different) thought comes,
    like an honoured guest, into thy bosom.
    O (dear) soul, regard thought as a person, since (every) person
    derives his worth from thought and spirit.
    If the thought of sorrow is waylaying (spoiling) joy, (yet) it
    is making preparations for joy.
    It violently sweeps thy house clear of (all) else, in order that
    new joy from the source of good may enter in.
    It scatters the yellow leaves from the bough of the heart, in
    order that incessant green leaves may grow.
    It uproots the old joy, in order the new delight may march
    in from the Beyond.
    Sorrow pulls up the crooked rotten (root), in order that it may
    disclose the root that is veiled from sight.
    Whatsoever (things) sorrow may cause to be shed from the
    heart or may take away (from it), assuredly it will bring better
    in exchange.
    (Whenever) the thought (of sorrow) comes into thy breast
    anew, go to meet it with smiles and laughter.
    If champagne and orange juice is a mimosa, and champagne and cranberry juice is a hybiscus, what is champagne and pomegranate juice called?
    I must name it, as it is delicious!
    But I'm torn... Both hibiscus and mimosa are flowers, therefore, it seems to follow that a cocktail of pomegranate juice and champagne should also be named after a flower. However, upon Wiki-research, pomegranate flowers are called balaustines [buh-laws-tin], and that just doesn't sound very lovely.
    On the other hand, I also learned that the word 'grenade' originally comes from the French word for pomegranate, 'la grenade', and since champagne is French, 'grenade' seems like a fine name for such a concoction.
    Thoughts?
    Suggestions?
    Have you ever come across some new information, that you're shocked you hadn't heard of before, and just felt the need to share it with the entire world? Well, I came across such information watching a weird mind control documentary earlier this morning. I'm well aware of animal experiments and the like... but was shocked to find hard, documented proof of human experiments that were done. That violate all medical ethics. Yes, I'm aware of MK Ultra, but obviously not all facets of it. Not many are left living who know all the details, as most of the documentation was destroyed just prior to the Supreme Court's inquiry.
    So, here's some of what I found.
    Here is a link to the wikipedia bio page for the Doctor whose name takes the subject of this entry. Just looking him up and his story is fascinating. What's really creepy is that these experiments started in the 1950's. And if you have any kind of open mind at all, then you can agree that it's quite likely these experiments have not stopped. Just imagine, with all the technological advances that have occurred since the 1950's, how advanced such a project must be now. Especially since what's being researched usually isn't released to the public for at least a decade or two, oftentimes much longer.
    An x-ray of an unknown subject who has the brain implant the above mentioned doctor created.
    There is information all over the internet about this kind of stuff. Yes, I've heard enough conspiracy theories to last a lifetime. What catches my ears and interest the most these days is hard evidence and documented fact, like this. This kind of information MUST be more widely known. If we know, from the MK Ultra documents, that drugs, weapons, and all kinds of malevolent tests were done on unwilling civilians, then it goes to show that they (government? black government? call it what you will) will stop at nothing in their lust for power and knowledge. I'm all for the science of psychiatry, but only within ethical guidelines. Just imagine... what could "they" be doing now?
    Next time you see a "crazy person" wearing a tin foil hat... think twice. There's a good chance they aren't crazy at all... and you're doing what "they" want by shrugging them off as crazy. They could be a social outcast, someone who was horribly abused by an MK Ultra or similar experiment, and has not been able to set a confident step back into reality since then.
    A fun mix of documented fact and speculation.
    If this REALLY interests you, check out the testimony of Duncan O'Finioan. I've been on the fence about his story until this morning. This new information for me completely corroborates his story. These interviews are horribly compelling.
    Do your own research. Hopefully it will creep you out as much as it has myself. Happy Halloween.
